_____
¹These typefounders also represented wood type producers.
²These specimens were published by primarily/exclusively distributors or consumers of type rather than originators of type designs.  Distributor catalogs were extremely useful when producers’ own specimen books for the same period were unavailable.  Cincinnati TF originated several unpatented type designs and patented fonts of printers’ ornaments.  Hawks & Shattuck and Palmer & Ray purchased designs from freelancers.
³These US firms were “charter members” of ATF in 1892.  Branches retained their original company names until 1895.
⁴These US foundries joined ATF as late as 1922; Inland TF opened for business in 1894, two years after the ATF merger.  As part of the agreement, Barnhart Bros. & Spindler, acquired by ATF in 1911, continued independent operation until 1933.
⁵The ATF Jersey City headquarters building was occupied in 1903 [van Houten, Lohf]. The largest ATF specimen book was issued in 1912.
⁶These international 1920s catalogs offered still-popular 19th-century faces.
